ISC Student Cluster Competition 2022, co-organized by the HPC-AI Advisory Council and ISC Group, will take place during the ISC High Performance Conference (June 2022). This year we plan to have both digital/online along with onsite competitions based on COVID-19 restrictions.The teams that will not be able to join the onsite competition will be able to join the virtual part only. We will follow ISC guidelines for the venue announcements and plan accordingly. Based on COVID status, our plan is to welcome five European teams to participate the onsite competition, while the rest of the teams will participate the virtual competition.

This year there will be two parts for the competition, digital part and onsite part:

The digital part will be open for all teams, the teams will be connecting to remote clusters and run HPC applications, performing benchmarks and participate in coding challenge.

The onsite part will be open for up to five European teams following COVID-19 restrictions. The onsite teams will bring their own cluster (similar to ISC19 SCC prior to COVID-19), and run the micro-benchmarks and HPC applications, within three days of the ISC22 event.

For the digital part, the student teams will be competing over three supercomputing centers:

- Bridges-2 supercomputer: Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) is a joint computational research center with Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. Bridges-2 is the newest PSC supercomputer (in production as of March 2021). The participation teams will be experimenting with both CPU and GPU clusters. The CPU supercomputing cluster includes 488 nodes of dual AMD Rome 7742 CPUs, 256GB of memory and HDR InfiniBand 200Gb/s network. The GPU cluster is a 24 node cluster, equipped with 8 NVIDIA Tesla V100 and Intel Cascade Lake Xeon Gold 6248 CPUs, 512GB of RAM and Two HDR InfiniBand 200Gb/s network adapters.

- Niagara supercomputer: The supercomputer owned by University of Toronto and operates by SciNet, includes 2016 Intel Skylake Xeon 6148 nodes, 202GB of RAM and InfiniBand EDR networking.

- HPCAC-AI Cluster Center, Thor cluster: HPC Advisory Council High-Performance Center offers an environment for developing, testing, benchmarking and optimizing products based on clustering technology. Thor Cluster is a 32 node cluster that equipped with NVIDIA BlueField-2 Data Processing Unit (DPU).

HPCAC-AI and ISC-HPC would like to thank Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh) and SciNet (University of Toronto) for their support in ISC22 Student Cluster Competition.

The competition will include applications that address education and applied learning towards accelerating bioscience research and discovery. The student teams will be tasked to test several applications that are being used by scientists and researchers.

The ISC Student Cluster Competition (SCC) encourages international teams of university students to showcase their expertise in a friendly yet spirited competition that fosters critical skills, professional relationships, competitive spirit and lifelong comraderies.

The ISC SCC is an integral part of ISC 2022, Its ongoing success and growing recognition as a world championship competition are a result of the collaborative partnership between ISC and the HPC-AI Advisory Council.

Over these intense competition days, the teams demonstrate incredible capabilities to obtaining the greatest performance across a series of benchmarks and applications. In parallel to their day-to-day learnings, the students’ novel approaches and unique perspectives gained during the competition are integral to our own education – teaching us how HPC influences our world.
